It is my sincere prayer that I will be able to teach my children pure charity and true service. I have prayerfully tried to show them how to be charitable. I have explained to them what it means to be charitable. And I have tried to give them opportunities to be charitable.
In March, as Kieralee's birthday neared, I made a simple suggestion. I suggested that if Kieralee wanted to, she could ask her friends to bring a nonperishable food item to her birthday party instead of presents. I then explained that we would take those food item to a food pantry and donate them. I also explained what a food pantry is and how they help those who are going without food. She immediately wanted to do it. I asked her several times after that initial talk if she was sure. Each time she promptly replied, "Yes, Mom!"
And so that is exactly what she did.
We recently made the trip to Willing Partners for Kieralee to make her donation. She was thrilled when they invited her to the back to put her cans into the boxes to be distributed.
When we got back into the car I asked Kieralee how she felt, she said "I feel happy!"
Yes, Kieralee charity makes you feel happy!
(Thank you to all those who came to Kieralee's party and donated a can of food)

That's great! I don't think I could completely do away with Birthday presents (the only time my mom and I could "bond" would be over a good shopping trip) but I like the idea for birthday parties because I could only imagine parents being sick of trying to think up of a new toy or gimick to bring to a little one's birthday party. Thanks for the idea!
She still got gifts from grandparents and such.
I got the idea from a friend in Texas who said it worked out because people didn't feel pressured to buy something or not come because they couldn't buy something. Everyone has a can of food in their pantry!
Kieralee loved it. She said she is doing it from now on. And Lathen wants to do it too!
Jonie, that's really awesome.
And it's awesome to do some catch-up on your blog! Your kids are adorable (and grown-up-!) and y'all look great! We miss you--I can't believe Heath is 1. Wow. And btw, we thoroughly enjoyed the Lathen-eating-worm video, ha!
love, Sally
P.S. That IS an impressive summer reading list--I think i have a little 5-book series on my to-do list is all. That stack o'books makes me want to be more ambitious (and maybe less fictional:)
