Michigan Trip, installment # 2

Skipping to the end of our trip...

As we planned our return trip to NC we decided to take a little detour.  Kirtland, OH was only an hour past Cleveland, OH and we were going right past Cleveland to head home so we decided to go.  Kirtland, OH is a church historical site, the place where the Saints built the very first temple in this dispensation.  We really enjoyed  the opportunity we had to visit this historic site.  We first went to the LDS visitor's center and got the tour of the Newel K. Whitney General Store and other homes of early Saints in that area.  Then we headed over to get a tour of the Kirtland Temple.  What a beautiful temple.  Thinking of what the Saints sacrificed, so much, it was a humbling experience.  And just knowing that we walked where the Prophet walked, seeing his actual table (on loan from a historic museum) it was just awesome.  The best part?  Sharing it with our kids.  It opened the door to a long conversation with Lathen on the ride home after our Kirtland stop (Kieralee was asleep).  His little mind was like a thirsty sponge drinking up all the information I could pour.  While explaining that we walked where the Prophet Joseph Smith walked Lathen said thoughtfully, "I wish he would have had paint on his feet so we could have seen his footprints."

I wish we had had more time to walk around, but alas we still had a long drive and the sites only stayed open for so long.  Maybe next time we'll stop again!
