A few months ago, when we were still living in Texas, Kieralee and Lathen got a lesson on microwaves. You see the kids, especially Kieralee love popcorn. Often a movie snack will be popcorn and M&M's (it's really good, you should try it). Well, one day Kevin was busy working on the house, trying to get it ready to sell while I was back taking a much needed 9-months-pregnant-nap. When all of sudden Lathen comes through the house with urgency in his voice saying they needed help. We rush in to discover the microwave on fire! Kieralee had decided to make herself some popcorn, only she put in an aluminum lined chip back instead. It was then we had a long talk about microwaves, safety and house fires. Until this point they had never tried to use the microwave so we hadn't thought to talk about it. We had had the house fire talk, you know the how to get out, testing door knobs, crawling etc. You know the night to tell you kids about 911 only to have them try it, without your knowledge. You get that phone call from 911 where they ask if there is an emergency at your house. Thankfully they were very understanding, said it happens all the time. Anyway, back to microwaves and today. I've been letting Lathen do more and more now that he is older (like almost six is old, ha!). Today the kids asked for popcorn so I let Lathen make it. He was very pleased with himself. I guess it's like my dad says about gun safety, "Kids that know how to use guns don't end up shooting people by accident." If Lathen (and soon Kieralee) know how to use the microwave correctly they won't set the house of fire...maybe...
Maybe not...when we lived in Hendersonville, NC Kevin put a mug in the microwave to make hot chocolate only to melt the rubber handle and catch the microwave on fire...

LOL! Great job, Lathen! :D
I love salty-sweet snacks. Instead of M&M's one time I put bits of dark chocolate in my popcorn along with some sun chips... yum!
My family had a dear elderly friend when I was in high school and college who didn't know much about microwaves. My sister and I went over to watch a movie at her house with her. She offered to make the microwave popcorn we had brought with us while we went to the basement to choose a movie. I should have known something was wrong when she asked if she should take the plastic wrapping off of it...
We came back up to the kitchen only to find it full of smoke and a look of "what did I do wrong?" look on Mrs. B's face. The popcorn had been burnt to an absolute crisp. We assured her it happened to everyone and we watched our movie - without popcorn.
