Desperate times call for desperate measures. We are two pasty red-heads living in the Texas sun in a desperate struggle not to die of heat stroke. Last month when our electric bill came, I opened it and almost fell out right where I stood. Kevin and I talked about it and decided we needed to do everything we could to lower our electric bill and still keep the house livable. With that we went ahead with our purchase of blinds, thank goodness! We also raised our a/c to 80 degrees. No that is not a typo our house is 80 degrees. I thought for sure that would do it, but no the a/c still runs practically ALL day! So again we began to think of little things we could do to help our house stay cooler. We shut off all doors to rooms when we are not in them and try not to use lights if at all possible and we don't use the stove or oven during the day...still the Texas sun is relentless and cruel. So I decided to go drastic and I applied aluminum foil to many of our windows. Yes, I ghetto fabulized our home with some aluminum foil and tape :)
And for all of my friends who don't live in Texas, yes it is hot. Sunday our car registered 106. Today the high is suppose to be 103 (no telling what it will be when you calculate heat index). With a 10 day forecast looking something like 103, 102, 102, 102, 102, 102... Seriously, if you don't believe me you can look check it out here. One good thing though, it sure makes me want to live a good life because I couldn't live an eternity in heat worse than this! And in case you were wondering how humid it is, well lets just say going outside feels a lot like stepping into a sweaty arm pit!
Like my Dad always says "It may be hot, but at least it is humid too!"

another thing you can do, is caulk around your windows, even though it doesnt feel like air is escaping, it is! also, you can put window tint on your windows instead of foil, so you can still see out and it reflects the heat better than foil. good luck!
Ha! Actually not a bad idea. Can you tell a difference?
I hope it works...good luck!!
Jones,
Go to Lowes website and see what else you can do. The foil doesn't make it hotter? I would like you all would bake like a potato!!
You know where the weather is ALWAYS nice? MICHIGAN!!**
:) **Except for the few months of Nov-April when there is 8 feet of snow on the ground, ice, and wind that cuts like a blade.
I am so glad Im not pregnant down there. The weather is beautiful up here -today Im wearing jeans can you believe it? Oh and we are having a boy!
Another idea: If you can close ac vents in rooms you don't use, then close the doors to those rooms, it increases the effect/pressure of the ac in rooms you do use (so long as there is no air returns in those unused rooms). I think it has been saving us money to keep our spare bedroom closed off like that.
hey, if'n you're wanting to escape the oppressive heat, mexico city's highs are in the 70s and it rains here every night. i know, totally not what you'd think, but we've got an extra bed, and we love company. think it over. i hope september bring y'all some bearable temps!!
