There, I said it. I won't deny it or try to hide it, I am loving homeschool! Today is only our second day and already I've gotten tingles. For our history/geography time we are learning about the 50 states. Today we put together a puzzle of the the states and then Lathen picked one to start learning about. He picked Iowa. So then it was time to go to the library and get some books. When we got home we were reading in our Iowa book and on the first page of the book it said this: "In the South, the Mormon Pioneer Trail tracks the rugged, winding route that thousands of pioneers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints followed. Fleeing religious persecution in the East, they sought a new life near the Great Salt Lake in Utah." Now I was a history major and I never, not once in a history class learned about the Mormon Trail or the Church in any way. So I jumped on this and we talked about the early Saints (it also helps that I've been listening to Gerald N. Lund's book Fire of the Covenant on CD in the car). Then the next chapter of the book talks about the ancient Indian mounds. So then we took a detour and opened up the Book of Mormon to read about Captain Moroni in Alma chapter 50:1-6 where he fortifies the cities by building great mounds of earth on then adding things on top. I just loved the fact that I got to teach out of the Book of Mormon today while talking about the state of Iowa, it was awesome!
